Evelīna Deičmane is chosen to be granted a Bethanien residency in Berlin

kim? 

After a visit of the director of Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Christoph Tannert in Riga, during which he met and interviewed Latvian artists; as a result, Evelīna Deičmane was chosen to be granted a Bethanien residency in Berlin.

Due to the agreement between “kim?” association and Künstlerhaus Bethanien, one artist from Latvia has an opportunity to spend half a year in the artists residency in Künstlerhaus Bethanien, organising a solo exhibition in Berlin; the exhibition later is being exposed also in Riga, in one of the kim? galleries in Spīķeri.

The decision about inviting artist to the residency is being taken in two stages: first, kim? summons a commission of 8 experts, which nominates 6 artists for the residency in Künstlerhaus Bethanien. The members of commission are: darbojas Daiga Rudzāte, Ieva Astahovska, Alise Tīfentāle, Raitis Šmits, Zane Čulkstēna, Zane Onckule, Jeļena Budanceva, and the head of the commion is Ojārs Pētersons from the Art Academy of Latvia, Visual Communication Department.

After the decision of the commission is being taken, Cristoph Tanner, the director of Künstlerhaus Bethanien, arrives in Riga and decides, taking under decision CV of artists and personal interviews with them, about the artist for Künstlerhaus Bethanien. The artist spends 6 months Berlin (January 1, 2011, to 30 of June, 2011, in frames of the residency creating new works with an aim to expose them in the concluding exhibition in Berlin, followed by an exhibition in kim?, Riga.

The objective of the project is to stimulate the cultural relations and exchange between the artists in Latvia and in Berlin, one of the most active centres of contemporary art; to support the progress of a carrier of the artists from Latvia, meeting a stimulating, international environment; creative processes of a high incorporated value.
