In mid-July contemporary art exhibition The Way will be opened at Riga International Airport. It is intended to be the first event of a kind designed to attract wide international attention – to develop the image of Riga as a centre of contemporary culture and art.

The exhibition is organized by contemporary art project kim? in collaboration with Riga International Airport and other like-minded organizations. The essence and uniqueness of The Way is the exhibition of artworks outside traditional art spaces. Artworks by 18 authors from the three Baltic States will be exhibited at the airport. Media representatives have already been introduced to the first work of the exhibition created by the young and promising Latvian artist Kaspars Podnieks.

“Many of the exhibition visitors will be on their way somewhere while getting acquainted with the artworks, thus the way and road-related theme of the exhibition could be particularly topical to them. We will provide the visitors with an opportunity to encounter art which has transcended the usual exhibition space and could become one of the stops on their journey,” the conception of the exhibition is explained by Daiga Rudzate, The Way curator.

The outbound, inbound, transit and transfer passenger flow of Riga International Airport will be used to inform about the artworks created in Riga on an international level, as well as to attract tourists to art events taking place in Latvia.

“Riga International Airport is open to ideas, it is an important social and cultural space as it is the travel intersection of different nations and cultures. It is an excellent opportunity to highlight Latvia as a country of creative and artistic culture. The openness to cultural and artistic world reflects the airport’s desire to create a pleasant environment and space for travellers,” says Jānis Ķuzulis, member of the Board of the SJSC “Riga International Airport”.

The aim of the exhibition is to broaden accessibility of not only foreign, but also Latvian public to large-scale cultural events. The exhibition will also be one of the key stages in the development of the image of Riga as the 2014 European Capital of Culture, demonstrating that it is an active centre of contemporary culture and art; there are also other activities being planned during various culture events, such as contemporary culture forum White Night 2010 and the light festival Staro Riga.
