kim? AT ANDREJSALA IN THE HUNDERD-YEARS OLD BUILDING
The museum project was designed by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas who offers to create a modern multi-functional building, according to the project assignment developed by the international commission of experts. Alongside with exhibitions of art works it has been foreseen to allocate a wide space available for shops, restaurants un conference halls. The project implies a possibility of organizing cinema and theatre performances, concerts and art performances. In other words, the former CHP (Combined Heat and Power plant) will get a new life — it will become a modern culture and education centre.
The good news for people who admire historical objects is that the CHP building will not be destroyed — it is foreseen to “wrap” it with glass extensions to the building. Jānis Dripe’s — chief architect of Riga City — conclusion about the project of Dutch architect is as follows: “The old building will be embraced like an insect in amber”. As explained by Rem Koolhaas in the press conference last summer, the glass extension on the river of Daugava side would be suitable for wide and broad restaurant area, also hosting shops nearby. The architect proposes to use the darkest areas of the former CHP building as cinema auditorium or video library. The middle part of the building is planned to be used for the location of workshops and art works' depositories that visitors could see through the glass wall. The other glass extension is completely foreseen for exhibitions of art.
